Simulated Silver
If you are thinking of giving someone a diamond as a gift, have you considered all the levels that gift will be speaking from? If you give a traditional diamond, you are likely just choosing a piece of jewelry for someone to show you care. But if you give a simulated diamond you can show how much you care for not only that person, but also mankind and the planet as a whole.
Giving a Symbol of Love
First, the focus of your diamond buying – a special person in your life. While you may think that purchasing a simulated diamond or hybrid diamond is not as good as purchasing a natural earth-mined diamond, these hybrids have come a long way.
We’re not talking about buying cubic zirconia, but simulated diamonds. Simulated diamonds are made of created diamond crystals wrapped around a seed stone and fused together in a process with machines that were created by NASA to make a nearly perfect diamond.
When it comes to cut and clarity these are similar to the top natural diamonds.
Therefore, giving a loved one of this style of diamond is as much a symbol of love as any other diamond or perhaps more as man made diamonds were created to be among the most perfect of gems – an ideal statement for the person you love.
Loving Mankind
Have you ever heard of conflict diamonds? Also known as blood diamonds, these are diamonds that come from war-torn areas of Africa. Knowing the worth of diamonds, militant rebels have turned some countries in Africa into slave camps where they force families, children included, to dig for diamonds day in and day out. Those who don’t are threatened, tortured or even killed. They are essentially harvested with the blood of innocent people.
Once mined these diamonds are sold as a way to continue to fund militant actions in that area.
While there has been a global outcry against these types of diamonds, there are plenty of shady diamond dealers who will still sell these diamonds. Once they are on the world diamond market it is impossible to know where they are from. That means reputable jewelers who are trying to avoid this type of diamond may still end up purchasing them unknowingly because the conflict diamonds are part of the diamond market.
What does this mean for you? It means you have no way to know if you have purchased a conflict diamond or not when you purchase traditional diamonds. Unfortunately, you may be contributing to the problem by making a purchase you thought was innocent.
However, if you purchase a hybrid diamond, you will know you are not adding to the problem. Since these diamonds are made in a laboratory, they cannot be a part of the blood diamond trade.
Loving the Planet
The final thing to keep in mind when deciding what kind of diamond to purchase is where those diamonds came from – the earth. The process of mining diamonds is not a pretty one. Land is torn up and strained in search of any diamonds in the rough. Large areas of land are washed away to look for diamonds underneath.
The process of finding diamonds in many areas of Africa involves tossing aside the healthy topsoil to search for diamonds below, effectively killing off ground that would have been good for growing food or other vegetation.
While there are regulations in place that are supposed to keep this from happening, many diamond mines do not enforce them.
Purchasing a simulated diamond however involves no mining, leaving the earth in peace and still producing beautiful gems and jewelry.
